Spiritual Practices: Making time for God
Overview
When this encounter happens, Moses is leading the people of Israel out of the land of Egypt and through the wilderness. He has uncounted responsibilities. He is the leader, the primary judge, the supporter, the counselor of the people. Yet, when God calls him to the mountain, Moses makes the time. In verse 14 we see what he tells the people. He is going away for sometime alone with God and he makes arrangements so that the people can go see Aaron and Hur if they have any issues. Moses is willing to step away from his responsibilities in order to embrace his greatest responsibility, time with God. As he is on the mountain, he has an encounter with God unlike anything that anyone had ever had before, and he is forever changed by the experience.
It is the same for us. We can feel so swamped by our responsibilities that we feel like we cannot make time for God, yet that is the greatest responsibility of our lives. We go through the motions day after day, month after month, year after year, and wonder why things never change, why they never get better. Maybe it is because we don't make the time for God, we don't make the time for the one thing that will change us more than anything else.
Practice
This week, find a way to make time to be with God. Maybe it is getting up early. Maybe it is staying up late. Maybe it is delegating some responsibilities. Maybe it is letting some responsibilities slide. Whatever it takes, the most important thing we can do is to make time for God.
