Exploring the Text:
Place yourself in the middle of this scene. A young lady had died. The flute players were there trying to bring comfort to the crowd. Obviously she was fairly popular, given that there was a crowd of people there. Her dad was a ruler, which probably added to her popularity.
All of a sudden, Jesus appears on the scene, however everyone realizes that there is not much to be done here. After all, she is dead. Possibly, she could have been healed, but now it is too late. Jesus declared that she is not really dead, but merely sleeping. The group begins to laugh at this supposed ridiculousness. Perhaps, all of those present did not realize who Jesus really was. They certainly did not understand that He was the Son of God. The fact that He had just healed the woman with the issue of blood on the way to this ministry opportunity was not mentioned.
Looking at this situation, with a Biblical view point, we understand that Jesus was on the scene to perform a miracle. The people should not have laughed at Jesus, but the odds of her being raised up were stacked against her. It would definitely take a miracle. They definitely needed God to move on the scene, and that He did. Jesus took her by the hand, and she was raised from the dead.
What about you? Do you have a situation that needs a miracle? Perhaps there is a relative on drugs, a healing that needs to take place, or a financial situation that there is no way out of. The problem may be so far out of control that even asking God to intervene sounds laughable.
Instead of making a chuckle, realize that “with God, all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). Even in the worst of scenarios, God is able to bless, heal, and bring life (John 10:10). When we place faith in God, He will bring a miracle, just as He did in this passage.
