Spiritual Practices: Reflecting on what God has kept us from
Overview
In verses 1 and 2 the psalmist turns the peoples attention to what could have happened to the people of Israel if God had not been on their side. This is not something that we often think about. We ponder the things we wish God has not done for us that we want him to and sometimes we consider what he has done for us, but we don't often consider what he has kept us from. Sometimes what he has kept us from is even more important that other things that he has done for us. In this practice, we are going to take some time to consider what may have happened if it had not been the Lord who was on our side.
Practice
Start by opening your heart to God in prayer. Ask that he bring back to your remembrance what he has kept you from. Take a notepad and pen or pencil and at the top write, "If it had not been for the Lord" and then think back over your life and write things that God has kept you from. Give yourself at least 10 minutes to reflect, think, and pray. When you are done, read back over the list and thank God for all he has kept you from.
