Spiritual Practices: Musical worship
Overview
There are many different ways to worship and commune with God. We can do so through prayer and meditation, through acts of obedience and service, through praise and proclamation, and others. One of the most popular way that people worship God is through music and singing. That is what this psalm is about. The psalmist encourages his readers to give thanks with a lyre, make a melody with a harp, sing to the Lord a new song, play skillfully on the strings, and to shout out loud. Music and singing should not be the only way that we worship and commune with God, but it is an appropriate way to worship God.
Practice
Set aside some time to worship God with music. Find a quiet place if you want to be alone or gather a few friends if you want to worship with a community. If you play an instrument, play some worship music. If you don't, put on some of your favorite worship music or explore something new. Which every way you go, spend some time worshiping and connecting with God through music.
